Interior Design:
The Toyota Highlander has an interior that borders more on comfort than luxury. Certain trim levels get ambient interior lighting. The 60/40 flat-folding second and third row seats enable you to store a lot of items with the seats folded down.
Seats: The Highlander can seat up to 8 people. Certain trims get standard or optional second-row captain chairs, which reduces the seating capacity to 7. Inside, the cabin is spacious enough, with the exception of the third-row seat, which is great for kids but not really the best choice for adults.
The base trims get fabric upholstery and adjustable front row seats. Power-adjustable front seats and SofTex® upholstery are standard on XLE and XSE trim levels.
One of the Highlander’s most enticing features are the optional vibrant red leather seats that Toyota USA offers on the XSE trim. The red and black two-tone leather adds a sporty streak to the inside. The dashboard and door panels get red accents as well.
The XLE Nightshade sports black two-tone SofTex® seats with power-adjustable, heated front seats and contrast stitching on the second row.
The Limited and Platinum trims feature both heated and ventilated front row seats. Along with leather upholstery, power-adjusting and lumbar support, they also get a memory function. Only Platinum trims get standard heated second-row seats.
Steering Wheel: The Highlander gets a leather-covered steering wheel. The top-spec Limited and Plainum trims get heated steering.
Infotainment System: The new Toyota Highlander gets an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen display with wireless AppleCarPlay and Android Auto, a SiriusXM® trial subscription, Bluetooth support, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. It features a six-speaker audio setup.
Higher trim levels are upgraded to a larger, 12.3-inch display and a JBL speaker system.
Storage Space: The Highlander gets a few different storage options. Behind the third row is a below-average cargo space of 16 cubic feet. You can fold down the second and third row seats for an increased 84.3 feet of cargo storage. Only folding down the second row grants you 48.4 cubic feet of storage.
The Highlander includes plenty of pockets and cubbies, including two dashboard shelves and a total of 14 cup and bottle holders.
Climate Controls: The 2024 Toyota Highlander comes with an air filter and three-zone automatic climate control that allows the driver, front passenger, and rear seat passengers to set individual temperature settings. The second and third rows get AC vents too.
Exterior Design:
The Highlander’s design is bold, with sculpted contours and flowing lines. It has a powerful appearance and demands attention.
Body Colors: The Highlander comes in a number of paint finishes: Wind Chill Pearl, Cement, Celestial Silver Metallic, Magnetic Gray Metallic, Midnight Black Metallic, Moon Dust, Blueprint, Cypress, and Ruby Flare Pearl. Some trims, like the Hybrid LE Nighshade, have limited paint options.
The Nighshade trims feature extensive black accents and badging. The black side mirror caps, door handles, rear spoiler, and blacked-out alloy wheels give your Highlander a sleek and bold aura.
Headlights and tail lights: The LE and hybrid XLE trims get LED projector headlights, LED taillights, and DRLs.
The Platinum and Hybrid Platinum trims get auto-leveling projector headlights equipped with AFS (Adaptive Front Lighting).
The base and mid-level Highlander trims feature standard LED fog lights. Higher-spec Limited and Platinum tiers get high-output LED fog lights in their place.
Wheels and tires: The wheels used in the 2024 Toyota Highlander vary in each trim level. All Highlander trims are fitted with Goodyear Eagle Touring all-season tires.
Gas and hybrid LE models have 18-in. painted alloy wheels, while choosing one tier above them will get you machined-finish wheels.
The hybrid Nighshade variants get exclusive black 18-inch alloy wheels. The XSE sports black wheels too, but they’re 20-inchers. Limited trims feature 20-inch chrome-finished wheels. Platinum models have 20-inch alloy wheels as well.
Side Mirrors: The LE and XLE trims feature color-keyed, heated and powered manual folding outside mirrors with blind spot warning and turn signal indicators. The XSE, Hybrid LE Nightshade, and Hybrid XLE Nightshade sport the same mirrors in a black finish.
Limited and Platinum models sport more sophisticated heated power outside mirrors that are equipped with power folding, reverse tilt-down with memory feature, blind spot warning and turn signal indicators, and puddle lights with the Toyota Highlander logo.
Door Handles: Only Hybrid Nightshade trims get black-colored door handles. All other Highlanders feature color-keyed door handles.Depending on the selected trim, the Toyota Highlander sports either black or chrome inside door handles.
Windows: The 2024 Toyota Highlander sports High Solar Energy-Absorbing (HSEA) glass on its windows that provides UV protection and keeps the interior cool. It also gets privacy glass on the rear side, quarter, and liftgate. The Limited, Platinum, Hybrid Limited, and Hybrid Platinum feature special acoustic noise-reducing glass front windows.
Roof: All trim levels apart from the LE, Hybrid LE, and Hybrid LE Nightshade get either black or silver colored roof rails.

Powertrain Specifications:
The 2024 Toyota Highlander provides only 2 powertrains: one gas-powered and the other hybrid.
- The gasoline 2.4-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine generates 265 hp and 310 lb.-ft of maximum power and torque.
- The hybrid powertrain gets a 2.5-liter inline engine paired to three AC motors, producing a combined 243 hp and 175 lb.-ft. of torque.
The Toyota Highlander gets standard front-wheel drive, with optional AWD available on certain trims. The gas-powered Toyota Highlander gets an EPA-estimated 25 mpg, while the hybrid Highlander gets even better fuel economy, with an EPA-estimated 36 mpg.
Toyota Highlander Towing Capacity:
Along with being a Super Ultra Low Emission Vehicle 30, the Highlander also has a towing capacity of up to 5000 pounds.
Top Competitors:
The Toyota Highlander faces tough competition thanks to its cramped third-row seating. The Volkswagen Atlas, Hyundai Palisade, or Kia Telluride have more spacious third rows. The Honda Pilot does too, but falls short of the Highlander in terms of overall value.
The Chevrolet Traverse offers way more passenger and cargo space, while the Mazda CX-90 has better driving dynamics than the Highlander and the Highlander Hybrid.
Because of its cheaper price and superior fuel efficiency, the Kia Sorento Hybrid is one of the main competitors of the Toyota hybrid. However, it is not as spacious as the Highlander.
If you like the Highlander SUV but the third row is a deal breaker, go for the extremely similar Toyota Grand Highlander: This elongated Highlander has enough space for everyone.
Concluding Thoughts:
The Toyota Highlander is a darn good family car with great fuel economy, advanced tech features, driver assistance systems and safety functions, and comfortable ride quality. The Highlander gets better fuel economy than most of its competitors.
